Registered in 2003, Zubaan is a charitable trust based in Delhi. It follows in the footsteps of its parent NGO, Kali for Women, and has been an active participant, chronicler and publisher of the women’s movement since 1984. It works to increase the body of knowledge on women with a special focus on South Asia and India.
Zubaan’s work in the past few years has been to achieve this goal through the publication of books and pamphlets, creation of archives (www.posterwomen.org), organizing literary festivals and encouraging the exchange of authors from under-represented regions and communities, meetings and workshops to bring together multiple feminist perspectives.
Zubaan has often brought forward the voices of marginalized communities through its publishing work, focusing on women, queer and trans experiences (?) and in the recent past, has also shifted its focus to research and action work. With prior work chronicling the women’s movement through Poster Women, Zubaan is also currently engaged in developing a plan expand on it and attempt to create a museum of women’s history in India.
In 2016, Zubaan has successfully completed an IDRC supported South Asia wide research project (covering Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) on Sexual Violence and Impunity; it is currently working on a two-country project covering Nepal and India entitled Body of Evidence and Stepping Stones, which aims to disseminate – through theatre, performance, art – the findings of the sexual violence and impunity project to youth in educational institutions. In addition to this, Zubaan works with educational and corporate institutions to conduct workshops on the sexual harassment law and its implementation. As part of its work in the northeast of India, Zubaan annually organizes a Cultures of Peace Festival in the region and supports its sister organization, Zubaan Books, in its work with writers and young researchers from the region.
Its scope of work is both regional and international. Within India, Zubaan works with different organizations and institutions across the country to ensure that the knowledge it produces is widely disseminated in the various languages of India. In the past Zubaan has worked with some of the following partners:
- The Heinrich Boll Foundation
- The Ford Foundation
- The Sasakawa Peace Foundation
- The Asia Foundation
- The International Development Research Centre
- Panos South Asia
- Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan
