The Story of Sisterhood

Produced by Zubaan in association with Heinrich Boll Stiftung, New Delhi, India & Sisterhood Network, Nagaland

Written and Directed by Anungla Zoe Longkumer

The Story of Sisterhood traces the birth, growth and work of Sisterhood Network, a women-led organisation working for women empowerment and community development in the northeastern state of Nagaland. The film foregrounds the inherently political nature of women’s everyday lives, shaped by violence and conflict yet sustained through acts of resistance, solidarity, and collective care. The Journey of Sisterhood is part of Zubaan’s Cultures of Peace programme run in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Stiftung, New Delhi, India, under the initiative ‘Building Institutional Histories‘ which seeks to collaboratively document the histories of different feminist organizations in the region.

Begun in 2011, the Cultures of Peace programme aims to facilitate peacebuilding through knowledge creation, cultural production, archiving, discussions and conversations in the northeastern region of India, and covers the eight states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoran, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, as well as the contiguous regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong. The history of Sisterhood Network and more works chronicling feminist and women’s movements in India, with a particular focus on marginalized voices and histories, are housed on Zubaan’s Media Archive.
